A Note from the Principal

Well, we just wrapped up another Junior Jacks basketball season!  I love coaching fourth graders, not only because of their endless energy and positive attitude, but because they are a great reminder of where our high school students were not too long ago.

High school students may be bigger and look like adults, but really they are not too far off from being a fourth grader. They can be impulsive and reactive instead of intentional and reflective.  Sometimes they have trouble focusing, but they also constantly surprise you with how much they learn over a period of time.

The fourth grade Junior Jacks have learned so much since the beginning of the season.  We started out with jumping off the correct foot for a layup, and by the end of the season, they were applying the fundamentals of basketball to bigger problems like press breakers and zone defenses.  I see our high school students doing the same thing.  In ninth grade, high school students are learning math concepts that they end up using to solve bigger problems with engineering, computer programing and AP Biology.

At the end of the fourth grade basketball season, I was little nostalgic.  I will miss watching these fourth graders running down the hall at the end of practice kicking basketballs while dragging their gear behind them. I know it will be all too soon before they are in high school walking down the hall with a book-bag slung over their shoulder.  I am sure when they walk across the stage to accept their diploma, I will have a flashback to when they were in fourth grade.

Enjoy your kids this weekend and Go Jacks!

Raising Healthy Eaters

March is National Nutrition Month so I thought it would be appropriate to list some tips for teaching kids the importance of food, nutrition and eating skills. As with any part of raising children, no one is perfect but you can help raise healthy eaters.

  • Serve regular, balanced meals and snacks with a variety of nutrient-rich foods.
  • Provide calm, pleasant meal times where adults and children can talk together.
  • Allow children to use their internal signals to decide how much and what to eat.
  • Explore a variety of flavors and foods from different cultures and cuisines.
  • Share an appreciation for healthful food, lovingly prepared and shared with others.
  • Make simple food safety, such as hand washing, part of every eating occasion.
  • Teach basic skills for making positive food choices away from home.
  • Find credible food and nutrition resources when you don't know the answer.

While this may seem like an intimidating to-do list, two family habits go a long way to making all of this happen: regular family meals and involving kids in nutrition from the ground up.

Pups for People Fundraiser

Pups for People, a club at Oakwood High School, is dedicated to providing therapy and service dogs to those in need.

Over the past few years, the Oakwood community has supported this group and their mission to better the lives of kids in the Dayton area. This year, they are raising money to get a service dog for Lili Rodriguez, a 5th grader at Smith Elementary School. Lili was born with a condition called Arthrogryposis. This means she was born with joint contractures. Often the muscles around these joints are thin, weak, stiff or missing, making it difficult for Lili to perform daily tasks. A service dog would be of great assistance to her which is why Pups for People will be holding a fundraising event on March 10 from 1-3 p.m. at Oakwood High School, 1200 Far Hills Ave. Visitors of all ages can participate in carnival games, an obstacle course, play with service dogs and win great deals at their silent auction!

Class of 2019 Information

For planning purposes, the location of the Class of 2019 commencement will be the Dayton Convention Center.  This ceremony takes places on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at 7:00 p.m.

Seniors who have not ordered their cap and gown should call Jostens at 1-800-JOSTENS (567-8367) to order or go to their website at www.jostens.com.  Jostens has designed a custom rental gown for Oakwood.  The cost to rent this gown is $40 plus 7.25% sales tax ($42.90).  The rental gown will be returned after the commencement ceremony; however, the cap and tassel are yours to keep.  Please make sure to order the cap/gown/tassel unit through Jostens.

Seniors are reminded to schedule a sitting appointment with Easterling Studios for their senior portraits.

If pictures are taken at Easterling, the senior will automatically be included in the class composite and yearbook.  If photos are taken by another studio, seniors MUST schedule a sitting with Easterling to be included in the composite photo.  Pictures from a studio other than Easterling will not be included in the composite picture as this is a gift to the school from Easterling Studios.  Easterling's phone number is 222-8410.  You may also visit their website at www.easterlingstudios.com.

The Senior Slide Show Committee is collecting high-quality pictures for the commencement slide show, and we need your help!  We need elementary, junior high, and underclass pictures AND pictures of seniors in action from Oakwood Schools events.  If you take pictures, you can submit them to seniorslideshow@oakwoodschools.org, or bring them to the collection box outside the senior high office. Please indicate whether they are from senior year or earlier years.  If you are leaving hard copies, please make sure to put your name on the back so that they can be returned to you.  Names of those pictured would also be much appreciated.

Seniors:  Please send in a baby/toddler picture to Mrs. Baker in the high school office.  You may bring in a picture or scan and email a picture to Mrs. Baker at baker.beth@oakwoodschools.org.
