A Note from the Principal

This weekend our band and choir will be competing at Districts for OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association).  I know with our amazing, talented students led by Mr. Uhlenhake and Mr. Storost we will continue to achieve the highest ratings at these competitions.

I also want to remind parents that we continue to support our students not only academically but also emotionally.  This is done through our partnership with South Community Positive Health Options as well as our school counselors and our school psychologist.  South community provides a mental health counselor who spends three days a week at the high school/junior high supporting high school and junior high students and also supports elementary students throughout the district.

If you ever have any questions or concerns about how we can help support your children regarding mental health, please contact us.

What's Happening in the Guidance Department

Grief Support Group:

A Grief support group is forming this spring.  Oakwood Junior High School and Oakwood High School will each be offering a grief support group led by Melissa Tinker from South Community in partnership with the guidance department. These groups are appropriate for any student who is dealing with the loss of a loved one. If you are interested in participating, or if you have questions, please see your school counselor and/or contact the guidance department at ohs.guidance@oakwoodschools.org. Students will need parent permission to participate in this group.  If you are interested in having your child participate, or if you have questions, please see Melissa Tinker or a school counselor.

Raising Healthy Eaters

March is National Nutrition Month so I thought it would be appropriate to list some tips for teaching kids the importance of food, nutrition and eating skills. As with any part of raising children, no one is perfect but you can help raise healthy eaters.

  • Serve regular, balanced meals and snacks with a variety of nutrient-rich foods.
  • Provide calm, pleasant meal times where adults and children can talk together.
  • Allow children to use their internal signals to decide how much and what to eat.
  • Explore a variety of flavors and foods from different cultures and cuisines.
  • Share an appreciation for healthful food, lovingly prepared and shared with others.
  • Make simple food safety, such as hand washing, part of every eating occasion.
  • Teach basic skills for making positive food choices away from home.
  • Find credible food and nutrition resources when you don't know the answer.

While this may seem like an intimidating to-do list, two family habits go a long way to making all of this happen: regular family meals and involving kids in nutrition from the ground up.

Parker Love of Teacher Award

What better way to show your love and appreciation for a special Oakwood teacher than nominating he or she for the Parker Love of Teaching and Lifelong Learning Award.

Nominations are now being accepted for this prestigious honor.  The award is presented each spring and honors a current Oakwood teacher who uniquely inspires the full potential of each student with whom he or she works.

In 2010, The Parker Love of Teaching and Lifelong Learning Award was created by former longtime Oakwood teacher Bev Parker in memory of her late husband, Bob Parker.  Based on the belief that Oakwood teachers are exceptional and give much of themselves for the betterment of the children in our community, the Parker Award honors teachers who go above and beyond what is expected of them.

The award consists of a $1,200 prize, which is divided between the recipient and an academic department, grade or program of the recipient's choosing.

You can see the nomination requirements on the form located on the OSF website at https://www.oakwoodschools.org/community/osf/parker-love- of-teaching.  Nominations are due by March 31, 2019.

If you need more information, contact Mrs. Dante Connell, OSF Director, by email at contact@oakwoodschoolsfoundation.org  or by phone at 297-5332.

Class of 2019 Information

For planning purposes, the location of the Class of 2019 commencement will be the Dayton Convention Center.  This ceremony takes places on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at 7:00 p.m.

Seniors who have not ordered their cap and gown should call Jostens at 1-800-JOSTENS (567-8367) to order or go to their website at www.jostens.com.  Jostens has designed a custom rental gown for Oakwood.  The cost to rent this gown is $40 plus 7.25% sales tax ($42.90).  The rental gown will be returned after the commencement ceremony; however, the cap and tassel are yours to keep.  Please make sure to order the cap/gown/tassel unit through Jostens.

Seniors are reminded to schedule a sitting appointment with Easterling Studios for their senior portraits.

If pictures are taken at Easterling, the senior will automatically be included in the class composite and yearbook.  If photos are taken by another studio, seniors MUST schedule a sitting with Easterling to be included in the composite photo.  Pictures from a studio other than Easterling will not be included in the composite picture as this is a gift to the school from Easterling Studios.  Easterling's phone number is 222-8410.  You may also visit their website at www.easterlingstudios.com.

The Senior Slide Show Committee is collecting high-quality pictures for the commencement slide show, and we need your help!  We need elementary, junior high, and underclass pictures AND pictures of seniors in action from Oakwood Schools events.  If you take pictures, you can submit them to seniorslideshow@oakwoodschools.org, or bring them to the collection box outside the senior high office. Please indicate whether they are from senior year or earlier years.  If you are leaving hard copies, please make sure to put your name on the back so that they can be returned to you.  Names of those pictured would also be much appreciated.

Seniors:  Please send in a baby/toddler picture to Mrs. Baker in the high school office.  You may bring in a picture or scan and email a picture to Mrs. Baker at baker.beth@oakwoodschools.org.
