A Note from the Principal
OHS RANKED 7th IN STATE
Oakwood High School is the highest-ranking area school in the 2019 U.S. News and World Report. "I am so proud of our students and our teachers. Moving up in the national and state rankings is a direct result of our intentional focus on doing what is best for students. This ranking is truly the cumulative result of our teachers, parents and our supportive community working together, K-12 to add value to the lives of our students," OHS Principal Paul Waller said. U.S. News ranked Oakwood High School as Ohio's seventh-best school of the 736 Ohio public high schools they ranked, and 225th best of more than 17,000 nationally. The publication updated its methodology for ranking schools this year. Starting with 2019, the scoring was calculated on 30 percent college readiness, 10 percent college curriculum, 20 percent math and reading proficiency, 20 percent math and reading performance, 10 percent underserved student performance and 10 percent graduation rate. For more information on the calculations and to see a complete list, you can go to https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/articles/how-to-us-news-calculated-the-rankings

Students and Parents: As we finish out the school year, I just wanted to remind everyone that 4th quarter grades (not semester or final grades) will be used to check for fall athletic eligibility. I would encourage everyone to log on to ProgressBook and check your current quarter grades.
In order to be eligible for fall, you need to end the 4th quarter with 5 passing grades in 1-credit courses. If you need any help logging on to ProgressBook, please contact the tech department, either Matt Sproat at sproat.matt@oakwoodschools.org or Daina Levine at levine.daina@oakwoodschools.org.
If you have any questions about your child's grades or their status in a class, please contact their teacher and/or guidance counselor.
Any questions about athletic eligibility, please contact the athletic office.
Athletic physicals for all students in grades 6-11 will be held at Oakwood High School on Tuesday, May 21.
Sixth and seventh grade physicals are from 5-6 p.m.; eighth through eleventh grade, from 6-7 p.m. The cost will be $15 and each athlete must have a FinalForms account.

The guidance office is busy with the scheduling process for next year. All students have completed and verified their course selections. The master schedule for next year will be built around these course selections with an attempt to avoid course conflicts.
SENIOR INFORMATION
College Decisions: May 1 was the deadline for seniors to commit to the college of their choice. As soon as senior students have made their decision, they must notify that college of their intent to attend. They also need to inform the guidance office of all of the decisions they have received. As a courtesy, it is also recommended that they notify the schools they have not chosen so that opportunities will become available for wait-listed students. As students receive scholarship offers, they are asked to fill out a form with specific information about the scholarship and the amount awarded. The form is available in the guidance office. We want all scholarship offers (whether they are accepted or not). The scholarship total for the Class of 2019 will be announced at the end of the year – not individual totals.
Senior Survey: All seniors are required to complete the "senior survey" which allows the district to gather important information. The senior survey will be located in each senior's Family Connections/Naviance account. Seniors will be notified by email and announcements when the survey is available for completion. If seniors have difficulty accessing this site, please see Mrs. Lumpkins, Mrs. Owens, Mr. Woessner, or Mrs. Johnson in the guidance office.
Senior Service Days: Seniors will be released from school on May 21, 22, and 23 to perform three, six-hour days of community service prior to graduation.
JUNIOR INFORMATION
OHS is hosting the SAT and ACT testing scheduled for June 1 and June 8. Online registration is available at: ACT (www.actstudent.org) and SAT (www.collegeboard.com). Students should be careful to check registration deadlines. OHS Guidance will no longer send any ACT or SAT scores beginning with the 2019-2020 school year. We recommend students take advantage of the opportunity to send their scores to up to four colleges. These four score reports are included in the basic registration fee. However, if students utilize this option, they will not be able to view their scores before the score reports are sent to those four colleges. News from the nurse

Sun Safety Tips for Kids
The Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that 80% of lifetime sun exposure occurs during childhood -- and that just one blistering sunburn can double the risk of getting melanoma later in life. Protect your children by following these tips from the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Academy of Pediatrics: 1. Limit outdoor playtime between 10a.m. and 4p.m. Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply sufficient sunscreen. 2. Apply sunscreen properly. Generously apply sunscreen 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Scented and colorful sunscreens appeal to some kids and make it easier to see which areas have been covered well. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming. 3. Cover up. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the most important ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light-colored clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colors, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces. Protective clothing, hats with brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella. 4. Keep watch on medications. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask. 5. Set a good example for your kids. If your child sees you following sun-safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Skin protection is important for every member of the family, so team up with your children to stay protected when venturing out in the sun. Class of 2019 Information
