A Note from the Principal My first weekend in November was spent in my office at school getting some work done. I know it doesn't sound like fun, but it really was great. Not only did I get quite a bit of work done, but I was reminded that this building is always alive with activity. The high school fall play was in high gear with parents, students and teachers all working hard to finish the set, pick out the perfect costumes, set the lighting and all that goes into putting on an amazing fall play production. I can't wait to see The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, this weekend. Hopefully, you will have some free time to catch a performance. Students involved in Cyber Patriots were here all day on Saturday "hacking" away at their first round competition. We don't have any scores yet, but we know the Oakwood team scored very high. Oakwood has five high school teams and a total of 30 students in Cyber Patriots. I could tell the kids were having a blast! I love that our school has so much to offer. Have a great weekend, everyone.
Go Jacks!

The college application process is well underway for this year. Seniors are encouraged to turn in their applications as soon as possible to meet the necessary deadlines. Counselors require a two-week turnaround period, and a transcript fee of $4.00 is required to process each application. Also, remember to keep copies of all applications. Seniors should note that December 5 is the last day the guidance office is accepting college applications with a January 1 deadline. In order to meet this deadline, teacher recommendation letters should be requested two weeks prior to our Thanksgiving break.
College representatives are visiting the guidance office daily. Please remember that seniors, juniors and sophomores are permitted to attend these informative meetings. Students must sign up for the visits eight hours in advance through their Naviance accounts.

Thanksgiving and Gratitude
There are a lot of myths around the first Thanksgiving in 1621, but one thing is for sure. The Pilgrims were lucky to be alive, and they knew it! That is why they celebrated the first Thanksgiving. For several years, researchers have come to the conclusion that gratitude is a key component of helping people live happier and longer. The more you give thanks, the more reasons you have for gratitude. If we focus on what we have versus what we don't have, it directly leads to feelings of satisfaction and wellbeing. Research also shows that thankfulness helps us sleep better, control our blood pressure, and generally reduces physical complaints.
We are so blessed to live in the greatest country on earth. Take a few minutes this Thanksgiving to make a list of all that you have to be thankful for. You might be surprised how blessed you really are.

The earlier you begin conversations with your child about drugs and alcohol, the more normal it will feel. When youth feel uncomfortable talking to parents, they will seek answers elsewhere, even if the source is unreliable. PreventionMC.org
