A Note from the Principal

As most of you may be aware, it has been a sad and difficult week with the loss of Jacob Polete, a junior at Oakwood High School.  Students, faculty and staff are saddened by the loss of Jacob.  He touched the lives of so many, and he will be missed by all of us.

During times of sadness and difficulty, I am comforted and blessed that I live and work in such a caring and supportive community.  It is wonderful to see the school and community come together in times of sorrow and times of joy.

This past week began as a time of such sorrow, but students and staff came together to remember Jacob and share funny stories or moments they remembered about him.  We will continue to find the joy that resides in our students, in each other, and in our wonderful community.

Our prayers and thoughts go out to the Polete family during this very difficult time.  We will continue to wrap our arms around them, as well as our wonderful students.

   Go Jacks!

Stress Management for the Holidays

Stress and depression can ruin your holidays and hurt your health. Being realistic, planning ahead and seeking support can help ward off stress and depression. The holidays present a dizzying array of demand ~ parties, shopping, baking, cleaning and entertaining to name a few. But with some practical tips, you can minimize the stress that accompanies the holidays.

1.    Acknowledge your feelings. If you have lost someone close recently it is normal to feel sadness and grief.

2.    Reach out. If you feel lonely and isolated, seek out community and social events.

3.    Be realistic. The holidays don't have to be perfect or just like last year. As families grow and change, traditions and rituals often change as well.

4.    Set aside differences. Try to accept family members and friends as they are, even if they don't live up to all of your expectations.

5.    Stick to a budget. Before you go shopping, make a list and decide how much money you can afford to spend. Then stick to your budget.

6.    Plan ahead. Set aside specific days for baking, shopping, and visiting friends.

7.    Learn to say no.

8.    Don't abandon healthy habits.

9.    Take a breather.

*With a little planning and some positive thinking, you can find peace and joy during the holidays.

2.     No bells will ring during exams but students are expected to be prompt.

3.     Students are not to loiter in the hall during exams.

4.     The cafeteria will NOT serve lunch during the 3 examination days.

5.     Monitored quiet study is available all three days in the cafeteria as well as the media center.  Students should not arrive so much in advance of the scheduled test time that they disturb students involved in testing.  Early arrivals should report to the cafeteria or media center.

6.     Students are not permitted to visit the elementary schools during the exam schedule.

7.     IF school would be canceled due to weather on an exam day, the exams would stay on the same schedule; i.e., whatever was scheduled to be next would be next.  For example, if school would be canceled on Tuesday, December 18, exams for periods 3, 4, and 5 would be given on Wednesday, December 19.  Then exams for periods 6 and 7 would be given on Wednesday, January 2 – the first day back after vacation.

Establish a contract with your teen as a way of letting your teen know that you are there to help them.  If they make a mistake, let them know they can call you.  Create a code word or phrase that they can text you to let you know that they are in a compromisable situation, and that they would like you to come pick them up.  Make sure they know it can be at any time of the day or night.

Class of 2019 Information

For planning purposes, the location of the Class of 2019 commencement will be the Dayton Convention Center.  This ceremony takes places on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at 7:00 p.m.

Seniors who have not ordered their cap and gown should call Jostens at 1-800-JOSTENS (567-8367) to order or go to their website at www.jostens.com.  Jostens has designed a custom rental gown for Oakwood.  The cost to rent this gown is $40 plus 7.25% sales tax ($42.90).  The rental gown will be returned after the commencement ceremony; however, the cap and tassel are yours to keep.  Please make sure to order the cap/gown/tassel unit through Jostens.  Prices go up after their final deadline of December 15, 2018.

Seniors are reminded to schedule a sitting appointment with Easterling Studios for their senior portraits.  Pictures must be taken by December 15.  Once pictures are taken, a pose for the yearbook and class composite must be chosen.

If pictures are taken at Easterling, the senior will automatically be included in the class composite and yearbook.  If photos are taken by another studio, seniors MUST schedule a sitting with Easterling to be included in the composite photo.  To be included in the senior pages of the yearbook, seniors must turn in a formal pose to the yearbook advisor by December 19, 2018.  Pictures from a studio other than Easterling will not be included in the composite picture as this is a gift to the school from Easterling Studios.  Easterling's phone number is 222-8410.  You may also visit their website at www.easterlingstudios.com.

The Senior Slide Show Committee is collecting high-quality pictures for the commencement slide show, and we need your help!  We need elementary, junior high, and underclass pictures AND pictures of seniors in action from Oakwood Schools events.  If you take pictures, you can submit them to seniorslideshow@oakwoodschools.org, or bring them to the collection box outside the senior high office. Please indicate whether they are from senior year or earlier years.  If you are leaving hard copies, please make sure to put your name on the back so that they can be returned to you.  Names of those pictured would also be much appreciated.

Seniors:  Please send in a baby/toddler picture to Mrs. Baker in the high school office.  You may bring in a picture or scan and email a picture to Mrs. Baker at baker.beth@oakwoodschools.org.

Oakwood Schools Foundation - Alumni Plaza

The Oakwood Schools Foundation (OSF) has exciting news about an important project to share with you.  Thanks to a $50,000 matching grant and the generosity of OHS alumni, the OSF will construct an Alumni Plaza by the south entrance of Oakwood Jr. High on E. Schantz Ave. this summer.  This heavily traveled area will become a functional space for community gatherings, performances, outdoor classroom space and much more.

The OSF is accepting additional donations to recognize individual classes, students or families.  While donations of any amount are accepted and appreciated, classes who raise $1,000 will be recognized on the plaza, and an individual donation of $500 or more will receive an engraved brick on the Alumni Plaza.  This is a one-time opportunity to be a part of this project, and donations must be received by December 31, 2018 to be recognized with an engraved brick.  Consider making a donation to honor your child's class (and/or your class if you are an alumnus).  Be a part of the past, present and future of Oakwood Schools by helping to build our Alumni Plaza!  **Deadline for donation is 12/31/18**.
