IMPORTANT NOTE:  Due to construction during the summer of 2020, Summer School offerings are limited to high school physical education courses. These courses will NOT meet at an Oakwood school building and will be held at Orchard Park Elementary School in Kettering.

2020 Summer School registration packets will be available in the Sr. High Office, the Sr. High Guidance Office, the Jr. High Office, and the Sr. High Book Room beginning Wednesday, February 12th. Beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 5th, current sophomores and juniors may register on a priority basis in the Sr. High Book Room. Beginning Monday, March 9th at 8:00 a.m., and continuing through Friday, April 10th at 3:15 p.m., all students may register for summer classes daily in the Sr. High Book Room. No early registrations accepted.

Please note that the physical education classes will be limited to twenty-five (25) students per class. There will be two classes first session and one class second session. Beginning Monday, March 9th, students will be enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis. The names of students who wish to enroll after the classes are filled will be placed on a waiting list. You will not receive a written confirmation for summer school classes. Please watch for information in the Daily Announcements or contact Joni Sherk at (937) 297-5325 to confirm registration. Class lists will be posted by the Senior High Book Room and by the Junior High Office on Friday, April 24th at 3:15.

Full tuition and any fees for all classes must be paid in the form of cash or check at the time of registration (a separate check for each class). Please make checks payable to Oakwood High School. Please note that checks may not be processed until mid-May.  Signed permission forms must also be submitted at the time of registration. Should it become necessary for a student to drop a course after April 17th, refunds will only be issued if registration did not prevent another student from taking the course and/or if the reason for the drop is an unforeseen change in course location. In the event a refund is issued, a $50 processing fee will be assessed.



Physical Education I (High School).  60 hours., one-quarter credit. This course stresses development of skills in a wide variety of individual, dual, and group activities. Students will learn and practice responsible social behaviors in a physical activity setting. At the end of this course, students will be able to find ways to enjoy physical activity throughout their lifetime.
Please note: Students may only take the equivalent of one-quarter credit of Physical Education in Summer School.

Physical Education II (High School).  60 hours., one-quarter credit. This course provides all students the opportunity to learn the benefits of physical fitness and gain an appreciation of obtaining and maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle.

Because Summer School is a concentrated program of study, regulations must be strictly enforced. In most cases, courses are meeting for the minimal amount of time allowable by the State of Ohio guidelines.  

Summer School is an opportunity for students to obtain credit through direct instruction.  This format and schedule may not fit with every family’s schedule. If that is the case, please see your guidance counselor to explore other educational options.

1.    Students who are residents of the Oakwood City School District may enroll in any course for which they are eligible by payment of the appropriate course fee.  Non-residents will be accepted on a space available basis upon payment of the appropriate course fee plus tuition surcharge.  Dependents of non-resident Oakwood staff may enroll at the same tuition rate as resident students.  Both tuition and any applicable course fees must be paid at the time of registration.

2.    Summer school course offerings are published with the understanding that an offering may be canceled if insufficient students sign up.

3.  Tuition fees do not include the costs of any paperbacks, workbooks, materials, supplies, or field trip expenses, which might be needed in fulfilling the requirements of the course.

4.    A maximum of three (3) units of NEW credit within the required units for graduation may be earned in Summer School without special permission of the Senior High School Principal. Note:  No more than one (1) of the three (3) units of new credit may be in a core discipline area i.e. English, Math, Science, Social Studies.

5.   A student who takes a course for "no credit" will have a notation placed on his or her permanent record to indicate class participation.

6.   Time does not allow for teachers to be taken from instruction to deal with inappropriate student behavior.  Therefore, students who are disruptive will be removed from the class.

7.   One day of Summer School class equals one week of typical instruction during the regular school year.  Courses offering credit toward graduation (Grades 9-12) are planned at minimum requirements; therefore, a student must be in attendance on ALL DAYS except in the event of personal illness and other approved emergencies. Oakwood City School District Policy #5200 does not apply to Summer School courses due to the highly concentrated timeline. Therefore, the attendance policy listed below is what will be enforced for Summer School.

•    In no situation may a student miss more than three (3) days per 120-hour course, two (2) days per 60-hour course, or one (1) day per 40-hour course.  If that number has been exceeded, the student will not receive a passing grade and will not receive credit for the course.

•    In order for an absence to be excused, it must be approved by the Summer School Principal, Tim Badenhop at 297-5328.

•    If the absence is not excused, all credit will be lost for that day with no opportunity for make-up.

•    The following absences will be considered excused:
          o    Personal Illness
          o    Family Emergency

•    The following absences will be NOT be considered excused and will NOT be considered family emergencies (and will result in lost credit for that day with no opportunity for make-up):
           o    Family Vacation
           o    Camp, Practice, Competition, or Work
                    •     Please note that summer camps for your sports                                                 teams are not considered excused. If a student
                           plans to attend the summer camp with the      
                           team, the student should sign up for a Summer 
                           School session that does not conflict with the
            o    Doctor (or other) Appointment (these should be scheduled                             before or after Summer School hours)
            o   There are many other types of absences not listed above that
                  may be considered unexcused. If the absence does not fall 
                  under the "excused" category above, it will be considered

•    Tardiness:
              o  A student will be permitted to be tardy to class no more than
                  three(3) times per 60-hour course (or two (2) times per 
                  40-hour course). If that number has been exceeded, the
                  student will not receive a passing grade and will not 
                  receive credit for the course.
            o  Tardiness of fifteen 15 minutes or more will be counted
                as one-half (1/2) day of absence.

Course enrollment for all courses - minimum - 16 and maximum 25
