Students who received the Governor's Merit Scholarship

Nine Oakwood High School seniors have been awarded the prestigious Governor’s Merit Scholarship, a new program established under the leadership of Gov. Mike DeWine and the Ohio Legislature to encourage Ohio’s top high school graduates to pursue higher education within the state. This scholarship program aims to reduce financial barriers, recognize scholastic excellence, and support Ohio’s brightest students in continuing their education close to home.

The following Oakwood seniors have been selected to receive the Governor’s Merit Scholarship: Henry Almoney, Taylor Brown, Robert Einhorn, Joseph Hong, Sophie Schalm, Oliver Spaulding, Patrick Toussaint, Matthew Walton, and Tristan Williams. Each of these students has demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and leadership, earning them this distinguished recognition.

According to the Governor’s Merit Scholarship website, the scholarship provides an award of up to $5,000 per academic year for up to four years at an Ohio state institution of higher education or a private nonprofit institution that holds a certificate of authorization. The program addresses a key issue facing Ohio’s future workforce, as each year 35-40% of the state’s top graduates leave Ohio for college, with a significant portion choosing to stay in the state where they earn their degree.

“We are incredibly proud of these students and their accomplishments,” said Oakwood High School Principal Matt Salyer.  “The Governor’s Merit Scholarship is a well-deserved recognition of their hard work and dedication, and we look forward to seeing the impact they will make here in Ohio.”
