Oakwood High School is thrilled to celebrate the incredible accomplishments of its students
in the 2024 Dottie Yeck Good Life Awards, sponsored by the Washington-Centerville Public
Library. The Dottie Yeck Good Life Award program encourages young writers to reflect on
values that promote positivity, kindness, and personal growth.

Lilith Delapasse, a freshman in Mrs. Emily Sullivan’s class, earned the prestigious Good
Life Award Winner title and the top prize of $3,000 for her outstanding essay. In addition
to Delapssse, 10 additional 9th grade students from Mrs. Joseph and Mrs. Sullivan’s
classes earned recognition for placing in the top 25 out of 863 essays- the top two
percent!

“I commend Lilth’s achievements. She is one of only four Oakwood students in the
19-year history of the contest to earn first place,” said Oakwood English teacher and
department chair Emily Sullivan.

Two additional Oakwood students placed in the competition for their exceptional
writing:
 ● Third Place ($350): Johannah Meyer
 ● Fourth Place ($250): Kate S.

Students presented their essays at the Dottie Yeck Good Life Awards Celebration earlier
this month at the Woodbourne Library. Additionally, Oakwood students who received
Honorable Mentions include:

 ● Elijah Cox, Ava Flansburg, John Frazier, Alex Lee, Reese Lounsbury, Graham
Pontzloff, Elizabeth Steipp

Congratulations to all of these talented writers for representing Oakwood High School
with excellence.

Oakwood High School students showcased outstanding talent, leadership, and
dedication at the 2024 Ohio Model United Nations conference, earning several
prestigious awards at this highly competitive event.

Among the more than 100 nations represented at the conference, three Oakwood
Nations were selected to be debated in the General Assembly (GA). To have
resolutions pass to this stage is already an impressive feat, but the fact that two of
these resolutions passed by vote in the GA is even more remarkable, as many
resolutions do not pass.

In addition, several OHS students delivered compelling speeches and were able to
sway the opinions of over 1,000 delegates in a room. One highlight in the General
Assembly was the Israel group from Oakwood. They presented a thought-provoking
resolution to a very polarizing and current Middle Eastern issue. The debate sparked
passionate discussion, and the Israeli delegates led with composure and pride. They
responded to charged speeches and concerns with leadership. Mannie Williams, a
member of the Israel group, received the Leadership Award for his contributions.
Other notable recognitions include:

● Current Events Contest Runner-Up: Amelia Butler
● Outstanding Delegate: Eva Meehan
● Outstanding Resolution: Tanzania (Kiera Lindsey, Lilith Delapasse, Rylee
Bourne, Alara Ozcan, Ava Flansburg, Ella Murphy, Savanna Romer, and
Meryl Whittmer) for their resolution entitled "Bananas for Healthcare."

Oakwood was well represented by officers, including Liam Garrett, President of the
General Assembly, and Louise Devgan, Vice President of the Human Rights Council.
Congratulations to the OMUN students for their hard work, dedication and
impressive performances. Their success at OMUN 2024 is a testament to their
commitment to global awareness, diplomacy and leadership.
