Quiz Bowl earns silver at Little Miami, qualifies for regionals

The Quiz Bowl Team participated in the Little Miami Academic Challenge on Nov. 22, finishing in second place out of 24 teams.  The Lumberjacks’ performance qualified the team for the OAC Regionals in April.  The varsity team was composed of Matthew Drummond, Ty Fischer, Amane Velasquez, Anna Weaver, Harry Zheng and Evan Simpson.

The 24 teams were divided into 4 divisions, with Oakwood placed into the Gold Division, alongside Indian Hill, Loveland, Mason B, Fairfield B, and Anderson C.  Oakwood went undefeated in the pool, triumphing over Anderson C 92-15, Mason B 85-70, Loveland 91-30, Fairfield B 101-29, and Indian Hill 90-60.  The Indian Hill match was a total team effort, as the Lumberjacks received contributions from every player, with senior captain Matthew Drummond leading the way.

Oakwood’s 5-0 record in the Gold Division earned them a berth into the “Championship Flight” of the tournament.  Mason earned the first seed, Oakwood the second seed, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (CHCA) the third seed, and Walnut Hills the fourth seed.

In the semifinals, Oakwood squared off against CHCA, which finished third in the state last year.  In the Category Round, CHCA secured an early lead, but an Oakwood sweep in the U.S. History category narrowed the deficit to a single point.  In the lightning round, Oakwood erased a nine point deficit by correctly answering five consecutive questions, but still trailed by three points with two questions left.  With their backs against the wall, Oakwood senior captain Ty Fischer buzzed in and correctly answered both questions, lifting the Jacks to a stunning 70-69 “walk-off” victory.

In the final, Oakwood faced state-lead Mason.  Both teams played well, but Mason pulled away in the lighting round to win the title by a score of 99-62.

Oakwood’s JV team fought valiantly in the Green Division, losing to the varsity teams from Northmont, Milford, CHCA, and Talawanda, and defeating Batavia B.  The team was composed of Ian Ha, Karna Roy, Seth Schwartz and Bethany Weaver.
